Irrigation installation started

The installation of the irrigation system funded by the Places People Play Inspired Facilities grant got under way on Monday, 11th March, despite a blizzard soon after the contractors arrived.

Charlie Paget, the groundsman employed by Nottingham City Council which maintains Highfields Park, came ready to dig the first sod …

… and put a cheerful face on the conditions and the task ahead ….

… but the trench-cutting machinery soon arrived   ….

…and after blowing away the snow the line for the pipework was marked out and trenching could begin.

Croquet Association Millennium Award

The Croquet Association has announced that we will be given its biennial Millennium Award.

This award is for clubs with 5 or more lawns, and in the two years 2011 and 2012 we have:

  • taken on 3 bowling greens from the City Council, giving a total of 8 lawns
  • been able to offer year-round play for the first time
  • sunk a borehole to provide a source of water for the lawns
  • obtained funding to install an automatic watering system on its 5 original lawns
  • increased its membership and number of CA Associates
  • developed GC play at both club and tournament level to add to its strong showing at AC
  • continued to run a full programme of CA Calendar events
  • improved its website
  • contributed to the running of the CA and the East Midlands Federation

The winning club receives an inscribed plaque and a cheque for £250, and holds the associated trophy for 2 years. The trophy will be presented at the CA AGM in October.

The award is a testament to the many members who work so hard for the success of the club.  In particular a big vote of thanks should go to our GC & AC coaches/mentors who put in so much time and effort to help our our new starters each year.
