Croquet Durham took a 2-0 lead in the morning singles and had lost one of the afternoon ones before the doubles finally finshed (due to generous supplies of coffee and cake, heavy showers, lunch, a third game, and some deliberative play by the visitors). That left the match still live when the other singles started, but it was agreed that they would be truncated to a single game if the hosts took the winning point during it, which they duly did, to enable the visitors to get back in daylight. The reults with Durham names first were:
Roger Carpenter & Carol Brady bt Ian Vincent & Patricia Duke Cox 7-3 5-7 7-6
Andrew Carpenter bt Cathy Turski 7-4 7-3
