Nottingham club member Miranda Chapman won the Women’s AC World Championship today, Saturday 1st August, beating Gabrielle Higgins 3-2 in a closely fought final. Miranda was born in Australia and also played in New Zealand, before moving to England which she now represents. There is a report on the Nottingham Post Website and a radio interview with Miranda and David Brydon at 1:37:50 into BBC Radio Nottingham’s Alan Clifford Monday Afternoon Show.
Two other club members won consolation events: Ailsa Lines took the Bowl, which was for first round losers in the 16-player championship knockout, and Beatrice McGlen the Shield. Beatrice was the driving force behind Nottingham staging the event and chaired the organising committee for what seems to have been a very successful tournament. The Plate, a knock-out for those who did not qualify for the championship knockout, was won by Wendy Dickson of Australia.
The four Nottingham members playing in the event: Ailsa Lines, Miranda Chapman, Beatrice McGlen and Rachel Rowe, who was beaten by Miranda in the quarter-final.
Stephen Mulliner, Secretary-General of the World Croquet Federation, expressed its thanks to the Croquet Association and Nottingham Club for hosting the event, acknowledging the generous support of the City Council; the splendid work done by Charlie Paget, the groundsman; the caterers led by Beatrice, Irmgard Finnigan and Lorna Orton; the ground crew led by Martin Beacon; and the publicity generated by David Brydon.
